Question 51
Dr N,
I am 38 years old. When I was 26 I had a complete Hysterectomy because of severe endometriosis. I have very little sex drive and even when I have the urge my body will not agree with my mind. I heard on the news a couple months ago about a new drug that will be coming out for women that is like Viagra to a man. I have not heard anymore on it and cannot remember the name of it. I have looked everywhere possible including asking my Dr. and Pharmacist. Do you have any information on this new drug . I am desperate, please help me I was very active sexually before my hysterectomy and miss the feeling physically and emotionally.

Hi,
I am sorry that you are having this problem.
I have heard something about a Viagra type formulation that may be in the development phase specifically for women and I believe that this may be something in cream or ointment form that is applied to the clitoral area. However, I have no specific knowledge about it. Many women are already receiving prescriptions of oral Viagra from their physicians with success in terms of heightened sensation and lubrication. One study indicates that women with sexual dysfunction are not improved by while using Viagra.
The problem is that although Viagra is capable of increasing sensation, it does not enhance libido independently. However, it is almost certain that your diminished libido is directly related to hormonal changes induced by your surgery and a return to your previous sexual interest is probable with appropriate HRT.
Read the sections of the web page under both the Sex and the Hysterectomy headings on the left hand menu of the home page. They will provide insight as to the nature of the problem and some options. Then, get back to me if you like and I can give you specific suggestions.
