Question 83
Hello Doctor,
I am scheduled to have a total hysterectomy on August 31st. I am also going through a divorce. The thought of gaining weight, growing facial hair and having no sexual desire are scaring the heck out of me to the point of almost putting the operation off. I have fibroids and my uterus is about the size of a large melon. I am experiencing heavy bleeding during periods for the last six months and pain in the abdomen. please give me some encouragement. I am 51 years old and do not want to turn into a dried up prune.
Thanks

I think that based on all the nonsense you hear from some sources, it is no surprise that you are concerned. If you are willing to read a little and it sounds like your are, I believe you can optimize your quality of life.
There are a number of negative things that can happen to women hormonally following a hysterectomy. The reason that they appear within the context of my web site, is to assure them that they are not the only one that this happens to and to provide them with options to restore their quality of life.
I know that you must have a lot going on right now, but if you can find the time, read as much of the web site sections as you can. I would start with the HRT and Hysterectomy sections and any Ask Dr N questions and answers that seem to apply. After you have done this, you will have a reasonable idea of what is going on.
Following your surgery, I would try and have your doctor start some HRT while you are still in the hospital. I prefer non oral approaches such as a patch and you will also do better if you get some testosterone. The best strategy is to find someone who is an expert in HRT and if you have any problems, or would prefer this, let me know and I will try and find someone near you.
I hope this is of help.
Dr N
